Purpose

This project invites 3rd-grade students to collaboratively create a "Decalogue for Conflict Resolution" by exploring and practicing peaceful, respectful, and meaningful methods to resolve conflicts. Through hands-on activities and self-reflection, students will develop critical thinking and communication skills, understanding how to responsibly address and resolve real-world issues within their school community. They will engage with peers across different grades, leading them to act as ethical global citizens promoting empathy and mutual understanding. The project culminates in the creation of an infography that will be shared with the entire school, fostering a culture of cooperative problem-solving.

Learning goals

During this project, students will develop the skills necessary to resolve conflicts through peaceful and meaningful methods. They will practice active listening, demonstrate empathy, and engage in self-reflection to evaluate their strengths and areas for improvement. By collaborating with peers, they will learn to communicate effectively and articulate their ideas in a variety of formats. Students will critically analyze different conflict scenarios to find resolutions, fostering a sense of responsibility and ethical action within their school community. This project will align with the New York State learning standards, preparing students to navigate complex social situations academically and socially.

Products

Students will collaboratively create an infography illustrating a "decalogue" for resolving conflicts peacefully. This product will be designed to guide conflict resolution across grades and will be introduced to the entire school community. Additionally, students will engage in role-playing activities to practice these steps, honing their skills in real-world scenarios and building their confidence in applying the decalogue effectively. The final infographs will be displayed in classrooms and common areas to promote school-wide understanding and consistent application of the conflict-solving process.

Launch

Kick off the project by organizing a school-wide assembly where students introduce the concept of the decalogue for conflict resolution, using role-play scenarios to demonstrate its practical application. Invite peers and teachers from other grades to share instances of conflicts they encounter and discuss how the new process might be used. Facilitate small group brainstorming sessions where each group develops potential solutions to a hypothetical conflict, encouraging creativity and collaboration. Use this launch to emphasize open dialogue and the importance of each student's contribution to creating a peaceful school environment.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, third-grade students will present their infographics to the whole school community during a "Conflict Resolution Fair." Each group will have a booth where they demonstrate their step-by-step process for solving conflicts, backed by real-world examples they have practiced. Peers from other grades will be invited to engage with the presentations and provide feedback, sharing their own experiences and insights. The fair will feature interactive role-playing sessions where attendees can use the infographics to role-play conflict scenarios and determine outcomes. This collaborative event will foster school-wide understanding and the application of peaceful conflict resolution strategies.
