Launch
Students will investigate an NY Edge–identified local issue through a rapid function-modeling simulation, then create and revise an initial evidence brief that connects stakeholder needs, graph features, and possible prototype directions.
Days 1 - 2
Research & Empathize
Research & Empathize
Students will investigate a local issue through direct contact with NY Edge and another stakeholder, distinguish evidence from assumptions, identify recurring user needs, and connect those needs to measurable variables and units. Each student will complete an empathy artifact, an evidence-based need statement, and initial function-modeling notes for the next phase.
Days 3 - 8
Define & Ideate
Define & Ideate
Students will synthesize stakeholder evidence into a design brief, construct and compare three function models, generate distinct solution concepts, and select a mathematically justified direction for rapid prototyping.
Days 9 - 13
Build & Revise
Build & Revise
Students will build, test, and refine a chosen poster model, digital mock-up, or safe physical scale model through peer, mathematical, and NY Edge feedback cycles. They will document at least two evidence-based revisions and rehearse a concise public demonstration connecting stakeholder needs, multiple function graphs, calculations, design decisions, and next steps.
Days 14 - 18
Showcase
Showcase
Students will present and defend their function-based community solutions to NY Edge and other authentic audience members, then use audience, peer, and teacher feedback to complete a final revision and evidence-based self-assessment.
