Purpose

Explore the question, “How can you use scientific observation and drawing to explain a living thing, object, or process in a way others can understand?” Begin with a partner gallery walk, then investigate textures, shapes, sizes, and relationships through field notes, planning sketches, and varied drawing techniques. Use partner critique to revise your work and build a mini portfolio featuring a before-and-after sketch display with notes explaining how feedback shaped your final artwork. Present your work and reflection card to an invited guest at the “Close-Up Creatures and Objects Expo.”

Learning goals

You will use close scientific observation to compare textures, shapes, sizes, and relationships, then select details that clearly explain a living thing, object, or process. You will explore drawing media and techniques, plan for desired results, and demonstrate technical skill through initial and revised scientific drawings. You will give and apply partner feedback to strengthen clarity, develop your artistic voice, and document changes in a before-and-after display and mini portfolio. You will present your work to an invited guest and reflect on an academic success, a social-emotional skill, and a next step.

Standards
  • [Colorado] 7.3.2 - Demonstrate technical skills and processes to achieve desired results.
  • [Colorado] 8.3.1 - Employ feedback, planning and ideation processes to develop artistic voice.
  • [Colorado] 6.3.2 - Explore various media, materials and techniques used to create works of visual art and design.
  • [Colorado] 7.3.1 - Plan, anticipate outcomes and use feedback to grow as an artist.
  • [Colorado] 6.3.1.c - Use feedback from peers to plan and create works of art.

Products

Create observation notes and planning sketches that compare textures, shapes, sizes, and relationships in your chosen subject. Build a mini portfolio containing field notes, initial drafts, partner critique notes, and revised drawings that demonstrate your use of varied media and technical skills. Produce a before-and-after display pairing your first sketch with a final scientific drawing and annotations showing how feedback improved clarity. Present the display with your planning work and reflection card at the “Close-Up Creatures and Objects Expo,” explaining your highlighted details to an invited guest.

Launch

Begin with a “Why This Detail?” gallery walk where you and a partner examine scientific drawings of living things, objects, and processes. Identify highlighted textures, shapes, sizes, and relationships, then record the visual evidence that makes each example clear. Create a quick close-observation sketch of one subject and discuss: “How can you use scientific observation and drawing to explain a living thing, object, or process in a way others can understand?”

Exhibition

Create a “Close-Up Creatures and Objects Expo” displaying your initial sketch, planning notes, revised scientific drawing, final artwork, and reflection card. Present your work to an invited guest, explaining which textures, shapes, sizes, or relationships you highlighted and how partner feedback shaped your revision. Invite the guest to ask a question and leave a brief comment celebrating one detail that made your scientific explanation clear.
