Launch
Students will launch the engineering project by closely observing natural objects, asking questions about how plant and animal parts help living things, and comparing teacher-made example tools to identify simple problems a nature-inspired design could solve. They will begin an observation notebook page with drawings and labels, co-create early success ideas for a useful classroom tool or clothing piece, and complete a teacher-observed checkpoint showing they can connect a natural feature to a human need.

Nature Detectives Walk
Students will closely observe natural objects and examples, record what they notice with drawings and labels, compare how external parts help living things, and use that evidence to define a simple design problem. They will co-create measurable success criteria and constraints for a classroom-ready nature-inspired tool or clothing idea, then share and revise their early thinking through partner feedback and a design brief checkpoint.

Generate Design Concepts
Students will turn their nature observations into multiple design ideas for a useful tool or clothing piece, explain how each idea copies a plant or animal part, gather peer feedback, and revise their concepts before choosing a plan in the next phase.

Choose Solution Plan
Students will compare their nature-inspired design ideas against class criteria and constraints, use evidence from earlier observations to choose one team solution, gather and use peer feedback, and finish a clear build-ready prototype sketch with a short justification before moving into construction.

Prototype And Test
Students will build first prototypes of their nature-inspired tool or clothing design, test them with simple class criteria, record what happened with drawings and data marks, use peer and teacher feedback to make evidence-based changes, and complete a checkpoint showing they can explain how testing helped improve the design.
