Purpose

Students use fractions in a meaningful community context by designing paper flower bouquets and a flower garden display that clearly show equivalent fractions, benchmark fractions, and fraction comparisons. Working with input from a local flower shop, they apply math ideas to real design choices, explain their thinking with models and symbols, and revise their work with classmates. The project builds confidence and access for mixed-ability learners through hands-on creation, discussion, and shared problem-solving. The final display invites parents, peers, community members, and school staff to learn from students’ math thinking.

Learning goals

Students will compare fractions with unlike numerators and denominators using visual flower models, benchmark fractions like 1/2, and symbols >, =, and <, making sure the fractions refer to the same whole. They will build and explain equivalent fractions, including tenths and hundredths, and represent fractions greater than 1 as sums of unit fractions and as repeated groups of a whole number. Students will apply fraction understanding to design paper flower bouquets and a garden display that clearly teach others how fractions work. They will collaborate with classmates and communicate their mathematical thinking to families, school staff, community members, and the flower shop partner through speaking, writing, and labeled visuals.

Products

Students will create fraction sketchbooks, petal fraction strips, and small-group comparison cards that show equivalent fractions, benchmark fractions, and fraction comparisons with symbols and visual models. They will also make practice paper flowers and bouquet planning mats that represent fractions as repeated unit fractions and fractions multiplied by whole numbers. With input from the flower shop partner, teams will design and build final paper flower bouquets and a flower garden display that accurately models fractions with denominators such as 10 and 100. For the exhibition, students will present labeled bouquets, explanation tags, and short oral or digital guides for parents, peers, school staff, and community members.

Launch

Invite a local flower shop partner to bring sample bouquets and price tags, then challenge students to notice and discuss how parts of a bouquet could be described with fractions, such as 3/6 roses compared to 1/2 daisies. In teams, students sort real or paper flower stems into bouquet mats, build equivalent fractions and compare them with >, =, and <, then explain their thinking using visuals and sentence frames. Pose the question of how a flower garden display could teach families and community members about fractions, and show examples of paper flower bouquets they will eventually create for exhibition. End with a quick gallery walk where students leave sticky-note ideas about what makes a clear math display and how teamwork will help the class succeed.

Exhibition

Host a “Fraction Flower Garden” showcase where students arrange their paper flower bouquets into a large garden display and label each bouquet with visual models, comparison statements, and equivalent fraction explanations. Invite parents, peers, school staff, community members, and a local flower shop partner to walk through the display as students serve as guides, explain how they used benchmark fractions and symbols, and answer questions about their math choices. Include a short interactive station where visitors compare flower cards or match equivalent fraction petals so every student can participate through speaking, demonstrating, or greeting guests. End with a gallery walk and simple feedback notes from visitors that celebrate clear communication, teamwork, and accurate fraction thinking.
