Students will create a school weather station kit with handmade tools, clear labels, and observation guides they use across the 4 weeks. Along the way, they will produce weather tables, picture graphs or bar graphs, sky-clue sort charts, and revised display labels after midweek partner checks comparing readings and naming weather clues. Each student will also complete quick photo-based reflection entries tied to one instrument reading, what it showed, and a feeling or challenge from the day. By the end, the class will build a public data wall and simple weather data displays for the Weather Watch Showcase, where visitors can view the instruments and hear students explain one weather pattern they noticed at school.
Launch
Begin with a School Sky Detectives Start-Up outside or by a window, where students closely observe the sky, temperature, wind, clouds, and any precipitation, then sort what they notice into simple weather clue categories using picture cards and grade 3 science vocabulary. In partners, they share quick predictions about what weather patterns might show up over 4 weeks at school and record one question they want to investigate. Introduce a few handmade weather tools or sample instruments, let students test them briefly, and invite them to notice how clear labels help others understand the readings. Close with a whole-class setup of the class data wall and the essential question, “What weather patterns show up over 4 weeks at my school?”

Host a Weather Watch Showcase where 3rd graders invite families and school staff to tour a station-by-station display of the school weather station kit, including handmade tools, clear labels, and the class data wall.
