Purpose

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of the cultural, linguistic, and societal aspects of youth culture in the Spanish-speaking world, using 'Extra' as a springboard for analysis and comparison. It encourages students to engage critically through authentic media content, explore complex themes, and collaborate with community partners. By crafting narratives, refining language skills, and presenting original interpretations, students represent their cultural insights creatively and authentically, fostering a strong sense of connection to the Spanish language and its diverse cultural contexts.

Learning goals

Students will critically analyze the portrayal of youth culture, relationships, and daily life in the Spanish-speaking world as reflected in "Extra," comparing this to other media like Spanish-language YouTube series and telenovelas. They will adeptly use advanced Spanish grammar and explore cultural nuances, including humor and sarcasm. By collaborating on multimedia projects and engaging with community partners, students will refine their communication skills and deepen their cultural understanding through real-world applications and peer feedback.

Products

Throughout this engaging project, students will craft culturally rich teacher guides and write subtitles for clips from 'Extra', ensuring linguistic accuracy and depth. They will collaboratively develop and present Spanish-language podcasts and participate in a mock debate to explore and defend their analysis of youth culture authenticity. By the project's end, students will showcase their insights through a dynamic 'Community Podcast Release Event' and perform skits at a 'Cultural Narratives Festival', spotlighting their understanding of Hispanic cultural nuances.

Launch

Begin the project with a "Cultural Connections Workshop" where students actively participate in storytelling sessions led by Hispanic community members. They will explore themes such as humor and relationships through shared personal anecdotes that mirror the experiences and scenarios in 'Extra'. This immersive activity sets the stage for students to build connections and ignite curiosity about youth culture in the Spanish-speaking world.

Exhibition

Host an 'Authenticity Showcase Night' where students present their analyses of 'Extra', a YouTube series, and a telenovela through engaging poster sessions. Include multimedia presentations that highlight their understanding of cultural nuances, and organize an open-forum discussion with families and community partners to explore cultural perspectives. Additionally, facilitate live student skits and storytelling drawn from their reflections, allowing interaction with invited media professionals and cultural experts to provide insights and feedback.
