Purpose
The 2026 Global Goals Earth Day Summit aims to connect students deeply with sustainability issues by encouraging them to research and address real-world challenges related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through project-based learning experiences, students develop solutions that impact local communities and create exhibits demonstrating their understanding and creativity. This initiative fosters leadership, collaboration, and innovative problem-solving skills as students actively partake in designing a sustainable future.
Learning goals
Students will develop effective communication skills by engaging in panel discussions that require clear expression of ideas and active listening. They will enhance their critical thinking abilities through researching conservation technologies and evaluating their applicability to local habitats. Collaboration skills will be strengthened as students work together to design interactive exhibits and manage shared decision-making processes. Through self-directed learning, students will reflect on their understanding of life on land and technology impacts, using feedback to refine their projects. Additionally, students will gain content expertise in sustainable development goals, particularly Life on Land, through hands-on ecosystem interaction and community-driven activities.
Products
Students will collaboratively develop interactive exhibit booths that simulate conservation technologies, showcasing practical applications for habitat preservation. They'll construct a DIY Conservation Kit booth with tools like solar-powered sensors for monitoring local wildlife, providing visitors with tangible skills and activities. Additionally, participants will design a shoebox-sized model of a local endangered habitat, augmented with reality markers for interactive learning on tablets, demonstrating the role of technology in environmental sustainability.
Launch
Kick off the learning experience with a 'Green Tech Adventure' day where students rotate through interactive stations designed to showcase innovative tools and technologies used in habitat conservation. At each station, students engage hands-on with apps and devices, experimenting with solar-powered sensors or augmented reality, and brainstorming ways these technologies can address local ecological challenges. This launch sets the stage for project exploration, encouraging students to envision real-world applications within their communities.
Exhibition
Students will host a 'Green Guardians' community fair, setting up interactive booths that highlight habitat restoration efforts. Each booth will feature local projects and demonstrations, supported by community partners such as the San Diego Audubon Society. Visitors can engage in hands-on activities and learn about conservation tools, fostering direct involvement and awareness in sustainable practices for protecting local habitats. The exhibition will culminate with collaborative displays demonstrating sustainable solutions designed and implemented by students over the course of the project.
