Purpose
This project offers middle school students an immersive and hands-on exploration of rocket fuel and propulsion systems, fostering engagement and curiosity in STEM subjects. Through research, experimentation, and collaboration, students design and construct model rockets while considering environmental and sustainability factors. The program aims to deepen students' understanding of chemical reactions, engineering principles, and eco-friendly innovations, while enhancing critical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork skills through real-world scientific inquiry and community interaction.
Learning goals
Students will demonstrate an understanding of rocket propulsion by designing and launching model rockets, integrating knowledge of chemical reactions and fuel efficiency. They will enhance critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they explore the environmental impacts of rocket fuels and seek sustainable alternatives. The project will foster collaboration and effective communication through peer reviews, group activities, and presentations, while encouraging self-directed learning by utilizing feedback to refine rocket designs. Participants will reflect on their learning journey, considering the historical and future developments in rocket engineering within a community-driven context.
Products
Students will collaboratively develop a 3D exhibit featuring their model rockets along with digital showcases detailing their design choices and the environmental implications of their fuel options. They will craft interactive displays with mini launchpads and a timeline of key developments in rocket technology, emphasizing shifts towards greener alternatives. Additionally, students will create a virtual reality experience to allow visitors to engage with different rocket designs and see propulsion mechanisms in action. Lastly, they will design a live demonstration station to exhibit environmentally-friendly rocket launches and explain the underlying chemical reactions and thrust principles involved.
Launch
Kick off the project with a "Model Rocket Makers' Meetup," where students explore various materials and design prototypes to learn about factors impacting rocket construction and launch success. Conduct a thrilling demonstration of a small-scale rocket using everyday materials, sparking curiosity about propulsion principles. Follow up with a dynamic "Fuel for Thought Forum" featuring environmental scientists and engineers discussing the impacts and innovations in greener rocket fuels. Through these engaging activities, students will gain foundational knowledge and inspiration to embark on their rocket design journey.
Exhibition
Students will host the 'Exploration Innovation Expo', inviting community members to explore interactive booths displaying their model rockets, videos, and hands-on experiments that clarify propulsion and chemical reactions. This public event offers learners a platform to articulate their design process and share insights into greener rocket fuel advancements. By engaging in live demonstrations, students create an immersive experience, promoting a deeper understanding of their projects and contributing to environmental discussions with local STEM professionals and visitors.
