Learning Goals
Students will be able to formulate a focused investigation question about the coherence and developmental progression of PS–8 writing instruction by defining a feasible scope and evidence needs.
Students will be able to design a transparent method for auditing writing curriculum maps, unit plans, assessments, student exemplars, teacher reflections, research, and stakeholder input by matching evidence sources to the investigation question.
Students will be able to collect and document evidence about writing genres, purposes, audiences, instructional practices, feedback, assessment, and reflection across PS–8 by applying consistent source-note and coding procedures.
Students will be able to analyze patterns in PS–8 writing expectations, learning experiences, assessments, and student work by identifying strengths, gaps, redundancies, anomalies, and developmental transitions.
Students will be able to synthesize current writing-education research, innovative practices, and stakeholder perspectives by evaluating source credibility, context, relevance, and areas of agreement or conflict.
Students will be able to justify an evidence-based direction statement and bounded recommendations for shared writing outcomes, scope-and-sequence priorities, assessment expectations, and curriculum documentation by connecting each claim to findings and limitations.
Students will be able to revise curriculum-review findings and recommendations through empathetic listening, shared decision-making, feedback analysis, and critical reflection by documenting how input influenced revisions and unresolved questions.
Products
PS–8 Writing Curriculum Investigation Notebook
Each faculty participant maintains a research record containing question development, methodology decisions, artifact and source notes, stakeholder evidence, coding, personal analysis, proposed conclusions, limitations, feedback, and reflection. The notebook makes each member’s content knowledge and contribution to the committee’s shared findings independently visible.
PS–8 Writing Curriculum Review Investigation Portfolio and Forum Presentation
The committee produces a mapping-tool portfolio and stakeholder presentation containing its current-state audit, research and input synthesis, evidence visualizations, proposed direction and goal statement, draft progression and assessment priorities, documentation plan, limitations, unresolved findings, revision record, and phased Year 2 roadmap. The team must trace findings to individual investigations and explicitly account for conflicting, incomplete, or anomalous evidence without prematurely selecting or piloting resources.
