Learning Goals
Students will be able to analyze California map data to identify the four geographic regions and explain patterns in major landforms and Earth features.
Students will be able to investigate erosion by collecting observations and measurements that show how water, wind, ice, or vegetation changes Earth materials.
Students will be able to interpret patterns in rock formations, rock layers, and Ashfall fossil evidence to explain how landscapes and prehistoric animal communities changed over time.
Students will be able to design and compare solutions that reduce the effects of erosion, volcanic activity, or another natural Earth process on humans using defined criteria and constraints.
Students will be able to justify an evidence-based conclusion about how and why Earth’s surface changes while accurately using GLAD CCD vocabulary and acknowledging investigation limitations.
Students will be able to revise and communicate their investigation findings by applying peer feedback, contributing to shared decisions, and self-assessing progress after each lesson.

California Earth Change Investigation Portfolio
Each student documents an assigned or selected question, structured method, map and source notes, erosion data, Ashfall fossil analysis, hazard-solution comparison, conclusions, limitations, revisions, and six lesson self-assessments. Students may choose a paper research notebook, illustrated field investigation guide, or narrated digital investigation record while completing the same required evidence sections.
Earth Change Museum Scientific Investigation Exhibit and Presentation
Teams synthesize members’ evidence into a revised exhibit featuring an annotated GLAD California topographical pictorial, CCD vocabulary chart, erosion investigation, Ashfall fossil time-change display, and comparison of hazard-reduction designs. During Museum Night, team members explain methods, findings, conflicting or unusual results, limitations, and new questions using visual supports and sentence frames.
