Purpose

Students investigate how plant and animal structures work together as systems that support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction in different habitats. Through the Structure Sleuth kickoff and repeated observations of living things and specimens, they develop evidence-based claims about what organisms need and how visible structures help meet those needs. The learning experience builds critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and self-direction as students sort evidence, discuss ideas, revise explanations, and prepare a Structure Sleuth gallery walk. By the end, students share mystery-specimen posters, sorting charts, and clear explanations that answer how structures help living things survive in their ecosystems.

Learning goals

Students will observe plants and animals in habitats, identify visible internal and external structures, and explain how those structures work together as systems for survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction. They will develop evidence-based claims from their observations, sort structures by function, and revise their thinking using peer and teacher feedback. Students will communicate their understanding through mystery-specimen posters, sorting charts, and oral explanations in a Structure Sleuth gallery walk. They will collaborate to investigate authentic questions about how living things meet their needs in different habitats and reflect on how their ideas change over the unit.

Products

Students create field-note sketches, structure-function sorting charts, and quick observation cards as they investigate mystery specimens, photos, and classroom habitat examples. In teams, they develop evidence-based claims that explain how internal and external structures work together to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction. The final product is a Structure Sleuth gallery walk with mystery-specimen posters, labeled diagrams, and short written or oral explanations connecting visible structures to functions in specific habitats. Students present their findings in a class showcase and use peer questions and feedback to revise their explanations.

Launch

Begin with a Structure Sleuth kickoff in which students rotate through stations of mystery objects, photos, and simple specimens such as feathers, shells, seed pods, thorns, roots, fur, and leaves, sorting each by what it might help a living thing do: survive, grow, behave, or reproduce. In pairs, they make quick observation-based claims using sentence frames like “I think this structure helps because…” and record questions about which structures are internal or external and how parts work together in a system. Reveal a few real organisms and habitats connected to the specimens, then introduce the challenge: gather evidence from living things in habitats and create a Structure Sleuth gallery walk with mystery-specimen posters, sorting charts, and explanations. Close with the two driving questions and a brief notice/wonder discussion to surface initial ideas and set up investigation teams.

Exhibition

Host a Structure Sleuth gallery walk where students display mystery-specimen posters, sorting charts, labeled diagrams, and short evidence-based explanations showing how plant and animal structures work together to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction in different habitats. Invite families, another 4th grade class, or school staff to act as “habitat detectives” who ask questions tied to the essential questions while students present and defend their claims using observations from specimens, photos, and models. Add an interactive station where visitors match visible structures to functions and habitats, then compare their thinking with student explanations. End with a brief reflection wall where visitors leave notes about one new idea they learned from the class showcase.
