Students will launch the biotechnology challenge by examining how Legionnairesβ disease affects NYC communities, identifying who is most impacted in residential water systems, and generating evidence-based challenge and inquiry documents that will guide later research and engineering work as biomedical engineers.
Days 1 - 3
Engineer
Engineer
Students will translate outbreak research and user needs into a feasible biosensor concept for NYC residential water systems by studying exemplars, planning materials and roles, making testable design hypotheses, building an initial prototype, and revising it through peer and expert-informed feedback.
Days 18 - 26
Do
Do
Students will implement their team biosensor concepts with simulated apartment water samples, collect and analyze evidence about accuracy, reliability, and usability, and revise their conclusions using peer and stakeholder-oriented feedback before preparing results for the final share phase.
Days 27 - 29

Students will present the story of their biosensor design work for NYC Housing Authority water safety, synthesize evidence from testing and feedback, and conclude the project by documenting how their scientific understanding, engineering practice, and future goals developed across the full project.
