Purpose

Students work as designers, researchers, and decision-makers to plan a lasting outdoor space that supports calm, belonging, and learning for their school community. Through a fast design sprint, site measurement, plant and water research, rough models, budget choices, and critique with community partners, they use real constraints to create a garden plan future students can use and care for. The experience builds collaboration, communication, problem solving, and self-direction while giving students visible evidence that their ideas can shape a shared place. It culminates in a public tour, exhibit, and stewardship guide that document both the final design and the learning behind it.

Learning goals

Students will use measurement, area, perimeter, and scale drawings to plan the space, estimate materials, and make budget decisions that meet real design constraints. They will investigate native plants, soil, water conservation, pollinators, and maintenance needs to evaluate and revise garden choices using evidence from observations, simple tests, and expert feedback. Students will develop and defend design solutions for comfort, safety, accessibility, and belonging by building rough models, participating in critique and revision cycles, and making tradeoffs across cost, usefulness, and long-term care. They will communicate their learning through portfolios, legacy statements, stewardship guides, and public tours that explain how their research, collaboration, and design decisions shaped the final space.

Products

Students create rough models, annotated sketches, site measurements, scale drawings, plant research notes, budget pages, and design portfolio entries that document each revision from launch through design review. Teams also produce critique forms, revised garden plans checked for safety, accessibility, cost, and maintenance, and prototype legacy pieces such as tiles, stones, signs, or wayfinding markers. By the end, students complete a public tour route with plant labels and explanation cards, a before-and-after exhibition board with photos and design decisions, and a Garden Stewardship Guide booklet for future students. The culminating products are the finished shared garden features students helped plan and install, a student-led presentation or tour for “We Built This Place Night,” and an individual legacy statement naming each student’s contribution, challenge, and hope for future users.

Launch

Open with a fast design sprint in the actual garden site: students walk the space with clipboards, measure key areas, mark sun/shade, and photograph anything that affects comfort, safety, or use. In teams, they build quick tabletop models from simple materials and compare options for plants, paths, water, seating, and a keyhole entrance, then post their ideas for a gallery walk. Bring in a native plant expert, facilities staff member, or artist for a short provocation and feedback round so students hear real constraints about budget, maintenance, accessibility, and construction. End with a whole-group choice point where students name the features future students would most thank them for and commit to one design question their team will investigate first.

Exhibition

Host a student-led “We Built This Place” event in the finished garden where teams guide families, staff, and community partners along a tour route marked by student-made wayfinding signs, plant labels, and feature cards. At each stop, students explain the design choices, scale drawings, biodiversity research, budget decisions, revisions, and legacy art they created, using a before-and-after display board with photos of the empty site, rough models, draft plans, and final build. End with a short “Legacy Under the Lights” gathering in the space where students read individual legacy statements, thank partners, and present the Garden Stewardship Guide to future student leaders and staff.
