Students learn to look closely at plants, animals, and natural patterns to ask questions and solve simple real-world problems through design. In the first 4 weeks, they observe, sketch, build, test, and improve a nature-inspired tool or clothing piece, such as a leaf-pattern sun hat, root-inspired watering tool, or claw-grip picker. This opening experience helps first graders connect science ideas about plant and animal parts, natural resources, and design while practicing collaboration, communication, reflection, and revision. It also prepares them for the next project block, where they will investigate how sunlight changes the way places feel through studies of sunlight, shade, temperature, and shadows.
Learning goals
Students will ask questions, make observations, and record patterns they notice in plants, animals, sunlight, shade, temperature, and shadows using drawings, pictures, labels, and simple sentences. They will investigate how natural features and systems work, then design, build, test, and improve a simple nature-inspired solution using safe materials and a sketch or model to show how its shape helps it work. Students will explain how nature inspired their idea, use evidence from observations and testing to describe what worked and what they changed, and share their learning through partner talk, mini-gallery walks, and kind feedback. They will collaborate with classmates, reflect each week in a moon journal, and prepare a clear presentation for the final expo for families and community members.

Products
Students will create sketches, labeled observation pages, and simple prototype models as they study shells, wings, roots, claws, leaves, and plant coverings during the first 4-week block. Throughout this section of the project, they will build and test small nature-inspired designs such as a leaf-pattern sun hat, a root-inspired watering tool, or a claw-grip tool for picking up small items or trash. They will also make weekly moon reflection journal entries and student-made signs that explain how their design works, what part of nature inspired it, and how they improved it after feedback. By the end of the first 4 weeks, each student will share a finished nature-inspired tool or clothing piece in a mini showcase with a labeled picture, short sentence explanation, and display materials.
Launch
Start with a “Nature Detectives Walk” focused on the first four weeks, where students use magnifiers and sketchbooks to observe leaves, roots, shells, claws, feathers, and other safe natural objects in the classroom, garden, or schoolyard. Have them draw one pattern they notice, ask one question, and share one wonder with a partner about how a plant or animal part helps something live, grow, or stay safe. Then show 2–3 simple teacher-made models, such as a leaf-pattern sun hat, a root-inspired watering tool, or a claw-grip grabber, and ask, “What can nature teach us about building something useful?” Close by making a class chart of nature ideas students may use in this first design cycle, while teasing the next four-week focus with a simple question like, “How does the Sun change the way places feel?”
Exhibition
Host a first-grade “Nature Detectives Share Fair” at the end of the first four weeks where students display their nature-inspired prototype on a table with a student-made sign showing a drawing, labels, and one sentence about how nature inspired the design. Students give a short practiced presentation to classmates, families, or another buddy class, explaining how their tool or clothing piece works and what they changed after testing it. Include a simple feedback station with prompts such as “I noticed…” and “It works because…” so visitors can leave kind, specific responses. Add a safe demonstration spot where students can model how their design solves a problem to highlight observation, testing, and improvement.
