Students will be able to describe bee anatomy, life cycles, caste roles, and sensory adaptations using evidence from preserved specimens and field observations to explain pollination and survival in urban ecosystems.
Students will be able to generate a testable question about how garden conditions affect bee activity and biodiversity in a school or community garden.
Students will be able to pose and justify a directional hypothesis about how plant diversity, mowing, pesticide use, or nesting habitat will affect pollinator health and biodiversity.
Students will be able to collect repeated field data in the school garden and a nearby community garden and process the results with appropriate tables, graphs, and quantitative comparisons.
Students will be able to interpret results from field investigations to explain how human garden management choices influence bee health and urban biodiversity.
Students will be able to synthesize credible sources in a properly cited literature review to support apiary design decisions and explain how their design supports bee health.
Students will be able to justify limitations, uncontrolled variables, and revisions to improve the quality of their investigation and the performance of their apiary prototype.
Products
Annotated Bee Research Portfolio and Design Justification Report
Each student produces a research portfolio with bee anatomy studies, a cited literature review, field data displays, and a written engineering justification for apiary and garden design choices. The report must show original thinking through at least three design considerations and a data-based explanation of how the student would support bee health.
Revised School Garden Apiary Prototype and Pollinator Habitat Defense
Teams build, test, revise, and present a functional school garden apiary prototype with pollinator-friendly habitat features and a garden map showing nesting, planting, and management decisions. The defense must show how group design choices were selected from evidence, improved after testing, and limited by real constraints.
