Gavilanes Urbanos: Supervivencia en la Ciudad

Purpose

Los niños investigan la pregunta ¿Cómo encuentran alimento, agua y refugio los gavilanes en la ciudad? al observar fotos, videos, artefactos y espacios al aire libre cercanos, y luego usan dibujos, lenguaje oral y modelos simples para mostrar lo que los gavilanes necesitan y dónde lo encuentran en hábitats urbanos. Con visitas y apoyo de SDHS Wildlife Rescue, San Diego Zoo y SD Parks & Rec, los estudiantes identifican patrones en árboles, postes, parques y espacios abiertos que ayudan a los gavilanes a descansar, cazar y anidar, y comunican ideas para reducir el impacto humano en los seres vivos del entorno local. A lo largo de ocho semanas, colaboran para crear un mural o libro de la clase, mapas del vecindario y modelos de hábitat, revisan su trabajo con compañeros y comparten su aprendizaje en el museo Hawks in Our Neighborhood Museum.

Learning goals

Los estudiantes observan gavilanes en fotos, videos y espacios al aire libre cercanos para identificar el alimento, el agua y el refugio que necesitan, y para notar patrones entre los gavilanes y los hábitats urbanos. Usan dibujos, escritura compartida, lenguaje oral y modelos simples para mostrar dónde los gavilanes pueden descansar, cazar y anidar, y cómo la forma de un objeto apoya esas funciones. Los estudiantes comunican ideas para reducir el impacto humano en los gavilanes al diseñar y revisar espacios seguros en la ciudad, mapas del vecindario y modelos de hábitat con retroalimentación de compañeros y socios de la comunidad. Products

Throughout the project, children will add sketches, labels, photos, and shared oral sentences to a class mural or booklet showing where hawks find food, water, and shelter in city spaces while naming the learning goals in Spanish: alimento, agua y refugio. They will also create observation drawings from the Wildlife Rescue visit, bird clips from the Zoo, and the Parks & Rec walk, then revise these with a partner before the final exhibit. By the end, students will produce a neighborhood map of safe hawk spaces with drawn trees, poles, parks, and open areas, plus small habitat models or hawk survival scenes built from classroom materials. These products will be displayed in the Hawks in Our Neighborhood Museum, where students use their visuals and models to explain in simple Spanish and English how hawks survive in urban environments.

Launch

Kick off with “¡Sorpresa de gavilán en la ciudad!” using an SD Nat guide or teacher-led provocation with real bird artifacts or large photos, plus city scene images showing trees, poles, parks, rooftops, and streets. Children move like hawks, notice body parts that help them survive, and sort picture cards into comida, agua, y refugio they might find in an urban neighborhood. Then they explore a discovery table with feathers, nests, maps, and local city photos, and share wonders about where a hawk could rest, hunt, or nest. End by introducing the question, “¿Cómo encuentran alimento, agua y refugio los gavilanes en la ciudad?” and the learning goals, “Vamos a observar y compartir dibujos y palabras sobre los gavilanes” and “Vamos a mostrar cómo los gavilanes obtienen lo que necesitan para vivir en la ciudad,” then have students make a quick drawing of one safe place for a hawk.

Exhibition

Host a “Museo de Gavilanes en Nuestro Vecindario” where families, classmates, and community partners visit student-led stations. Children share their neighborhood maps, habitat models, class mural or booklet, and hawk survival scenes with drawings and photo cards, explaining dónde los gavilanes encuentran alimento, agua y refugio en la ciudad. Add a simple “hallazgos de la caminata al parque” station with sketches from the SD Parks & Rec visit and short clips or photos inspired by San Diego Zoo and SDHS Wildlife Rescue so students can connect their observations to real urban hawk habitats. End with a brief guided tour in which each child points out one safe city space for a hawk and tells one way people can help protect local wildlife.
