Purpose

Students investigate how different types of colleges and universities match their goals, interests, and needs while building research, discussion, and presentation skills. They analyze admissions requirements, costs, financial aid, campus culture, and programs to select one college to study in depth. The work culminates in a peer college fair where they present their findings, receive feedback from attendees, and revise their materials to communicate clearly and persuasively. This experience helps students make informed postsecondary choices while practicing collaboration, questioning, and evidence-based decision-making.

Learning goals

Students will compare types of U.S. colleges and universities, including admissions requirements, costs, financial aid options, campus culture, and programs of study, to determine which college is a strong personal fit. They will conduct research using multiple credible sources, develop focused questions, and synthesize findings into a clear, accurate presentation for a peer college fair. Students will practice collaborative discussion, active listening, and persuasive speaking as they share information, respond to audience questions, and use feedback from fair attendees to revise their work. They will also curate visuals and artifacts that help peers understand each college’s opportunities, expectations, and student experience.

Products

Students will create a college-fit research portfolio with notes on college types, admissions requirements, costs, financial aid options, and evidence explaining why one college is a strong match. Along the way, they will produce discussion notes, a source log, interview or inquiry questions, and a draft visual display that curates artifacts such as campus images, data charts, and admissions information to shape audience understanding. The final product is a college fair presentation for peers featuring a display board or digital exhibit and a short verbal pitch about their selected college. After the fair, students will revise their display and reflection using feedback from attending peers.

Launch

Turn the classroom into a mini college expo with stations featuring different types of colleges and universities, admissions requirements, tuition data, campus life artifacts, and short student testimonial videos. Students rotate in teams, use a “best fit” note-catcher to record surprises, questions, and patterns, and then rank which college options seem most relevant to them. Follow with a structured discussion in which students compare what makes a college a strong fit and identify what information they still need to research. End by introducing the challenge: each student will investigate one college and create a college fair display for peers that can be revised later using visitor feedback.

Exhibition

Host a school-based college fair where each student creates a display for one researched college that includes admissions requirements, costs and financial aid, campus life, academic programs, and why it may be a good fit for different students. Invite peers, counselors, families, and staff to circulate, ask questions, and give written feedback that students use to reflect on the strengths of their presentation and what they learned through the research process. Have students curate artifacts such as brochures, comparison charts, data visuals, and personal fit statements to shape visitors’ understanding of college options and access. End with a short reflection or discussion circle where students synthesize patterns they noticed across colleges and how their thinking about postsecondary pathways changed.
