Learning goals
Students will model and solve addition stories by using real objects, drawings, and equations with an unknown, showing different ways to find totals within 20 and beginning to connect those strategies to adding larger numbers. They will use math words such as add, total, altogether, more, and how many as they explain their garden stories, listen to classmates, and answer questions during check-ins and the gallery walk. Students will collaborate to build, revise, and publish garden story book pages using feedback from peers, the teacher, and a community garden volunteer. They will reflect on how they contributed to their group and what they learned while creating and sharing their work.

Products
Throughout the project, students will create picture and object models of garden addition stories using seeds, leaves, flowers, drawings, number sentences, and math words such as add, total, altogether, more, and how many. They will also build draft pages for individual garden story books and revise them during twice-weekly teacher check-ins after explaining how their model matches the story. By the end, the class will assemble a collection of student-made garden story books with one page per addition story and create a gallery walk display of their garden addition scenes and solutions. During the exhibition, each child will present their work, answer the essential question, and explain their math thinking to visitors.
Launch
Invite a community garden volunteer to bring small sets of seeds, leaves, and flowers, then open with a Garden Story Builders experience where students use mini trays of materials to make a simple garden scene. Read a short addition story aloud, ask, “What different ways can we show and solve a story about adding two small numbers?” and have children model it with objects, quick drawings, and spoken math language such as add, total, altogether, more, and how many. Let partners share how their models match the story, then close with a brief whole-group notice-and-wonder about the different ways the class showed the same addition idea.
Exhibition
Host a Little Garden Mathematicians Gallery Walk where student garden story book pages and object models are displayed around the room like a class garden museum. Each child stands by their work, reads their addition story aloud, and answers visitors’ question, “What different ways can we show and solve a story about adding two small numbers?” Invite families, another 1st grade class, and the community garden volunteer to visit, listen for math words like add, total, altogether, more, and how many, and ask students to explain how their pictures, seeds, leaves, or flowers match the equation. End with a whole-group read-aloud of the completed class garden story book and a short partner reflection before students share one thing they revised at the teacher check-in station.
