Purpose

Students investigate how text structures such as description, sequence, compare/contrast, and cause/effect help readers understand information, then apply those structures to explain a Minecraft biome or build clearly. Over four weeks, they plan, build, write, and publish an informative explanation for a real audience, using digital tools with support from the school technology coach. The work centers on the question, “How can we use text structure clues to help a Minecraft player understand how a build or biome works?” and builds clear communication through weekly audio or video reflections and a final recorded showcase tour.

Learning goals

Students will identify and use key text structures such as description, sequence, compare/contrast, and cause/effect to explain how a Minecraft biome or structure works. They will compose clear informative writing and short digital explanations that use text structure clues, domain vocabulary, and supporting details for a specific audience. Students will collaborate during planning and build sessions, use weekly audio or video reflections to name academic and social strengths, and revise their communication based on feedback from peers and the school technology coach. By the end of the project, they will present a recorded tour of their build that clearly matches an intended text structure and helps viewers understand the topic.

Products

Students will create a text structure mentor board, planning notes, and labeled Minecraft design sketches that show how they will teach others about a biome or structure using clues such as description, sequence, compare/contrast, or cause/effect. During build sessions, teams will produce their Minecraft biome or structure, short explanatory paragraphs, and digital slides or signs that help a player understand how the build works. Each week, students will add a brief audio or video reflection to a class digital journal naming one academic strength and one social skill they used. The final products will be a polished Minecraft build, an informative written explanation that clearly uses text structure, and a recorded audio or video tour shared in a showcase with support from the school technology coach.

Launch

Open with a short “Minecraft Mystery Tour” in which students watch or explore two simple builds or biomes and listen to brief explanations organized in different ways, such as description, sequence, or cause and effect, then decide which structure helped them understand the build best. Introduce the guiding question, “How can we use text structure clues to help a Minecraft player understand how a build or biome works?” and have students talk with partners about what made one explanation clearer than another. Invite the school technology coach to help run a quick hands-on build challenge where teams add one feature to a shared biome and record a 30-second audio explanation using a chosen text structure. End with students posting a first digital journal reflection that names one academic strength and one social skill they used during the launch.

Exhibition

Host a Minecraft Build Showcase where students invite classmates, families, and the school technology coach to tour their biome or structure in person or through a projected world walk-through. Each student shares a short recorded audio or video tour explaining how their build works and naming the text structure clues they used to organize their ideas clearly for an audience. Set up a digital gallery with screenshots, brief informative writing pieces, and weekly reflection clips so visitors can see both the final product and the learning process. End with a simple feedback activity, such as visitors leaving one note about what they learned and one question about the build, to support respectful communication and audience awareness.
