Learning Goals
Students will be able to investigate local water sources using direct observations from a watershed walk and simple water comparison tests.
Students will be able to describe and graph the amounts and percentages of Earth’s water in different reservoirs to explain water distribution on Earth.
Students will be able to explain how water moves and changes land in local surface processes using evidence from nearby drains, puddles, ponds, and streams.
Students will be able to identify local natural resources and community choices that affect water quality in the Hudson Valley.
Students will be able to obtain and combine information from the watershed association or park ranger to justify ideas for protecting local water resources.
Products
Water Detective Research Journal and Evidence-Based Prototype Sketch
Each student creates a field journal that includes watershed walk observations, comparison-test notes, a water-quality data table, and a simple prototype sketch for helping people protect or monitor local water. The journal must show how firsthand evidence from a specific place shaped the student’s own design idea.
Hudson Valley Water Stewardship Proposal with Tested Prototype Board
Teams create a shared problem statement, a higher-fidelity prototype or service solution, and a short presentation for families and community partners. The product must connect individual research evidence to a team design that responds to local water-quality needs.
