Students investigate how their interests, skills, and values connect to future choices in high school, college, careers, and entrepreneurship. Through design thinking, budgeting, college and career research, and a one-day internship with a community partner of their choosing, they gather evidence to answer what a successful future plan looks like when balancing time, money, learning, and real-world opportunities. Across humanities, science, and math, students solve an authentic problem by developing a practical small business or future pathway plan that is useful, affordable, and grounded in research. The experience builds critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and confidence as students test ideas, analyze options, and present a realistic next-step plan.
Learning goals
Students will conduct short research projects to investigate careers, colleges, and entrepreneurial ideas, using multiple sources to answer self-generated questions about their future options. They will apply the design cycle to identify a community need, test possible business or service ideas, analyze feedback and constraints, and revise toward a practical solution. Products
Students will create a career-interest profile, a college and training research brief, a personal budget for high school-to-college or career planning, and design-thinking notes that document a community problem, criteria, constraints, and possible solutions. During the project, teams will also produce internship question sets, field notes from their one-day internship visits, interview summaries with community partners, and comparison charts analyzing several business or solution ideas. By the end, each team will present a small business or community solution proposal that includes a prototype or visual model, startup budget, target audience, and evidence-based rationale drawn from research and internship learning. Each student will also complete a future pathway portfolio with reflections, a recommended next-step plan for high school and beyond, and a short presentation to teachers, peers, families, and partners.
Launch
Open with a “Future Fair Challenge” where students rotate through short, hands-on stations: compare real college costs, solve a budget scenario, examine a community problem, and test a simple product idea. Invite several local partners representing internships of their choosing—such as a clinic worker, librarian, farmer, entrepreneur, or city staff member—to share a 2-minute pitch about their work and a problem they help solve, then let students rank which one-day internship visits interest them most. In mixed humanities, science, and math teams, students use a design thinking protocol to identify one shared question about future planning, careers, or entrepreneurship and create a quick visual map of time, money, skills, and opportunities. Close with a gallery walk and reflection that surfaces the project’s driving questions about choosing the best path, balancing resources, and turning an idea into a practical plan.
Exhibition
Host a Future Pathways Expo where student teams present a career-and-college research portfolio, a personal budget, and a small business pitch connected to a community need. Invite families, all 8th grade teachers, internship hosts, local employers, and counselors to rotate through exhibits, listen to short presentations, and give feedback on how well each plan balances interests, skills, time, money, and opportunity. Include a reflection wall or digital slideshow featuring highlights from the one-day internships, design revisions, and key takeaways from humanities, science, and math. End with a panel or showcase circle where selected students share how their research and problem solving shaped their next-step plans.
