Learning Goals
Students will be able to investigate local water quality by collecting, graphing, and interpreting clarity, temperature, and pH data from a nearby stream, pond, or tap water source.
Students will be able to describe and graph the amounts and percentages of freshwater on Earth and connect that information to the limited supply of usable water in their community.
Students will be able to obtain and combine information from field observations, community water department data, watershed alliance resources, and short research sources about ways communities protect water resources.
Students will be able to explain how water moves through Earth’s surface processes and how local water conditions affect living things in the Hudson Valley.
Students will be able to design and revise a simple water testing station and testing kit that uses consistent procedures to collect reliable evidence.
Students will be able to collaborate to create a community-friendly water quality map and public service campaign that communicate findings, recommendations, and actions for protecting local water.
Products
Water Quality Investigation Notebook
Students compile a personal investigation record that shows their question, test plan, raw data, source notes, graphs, and analysis of their chosen water site. The notebook documents how they used evidence to reach a conclusion and what limitations they noticed.
Hudson Valley Water Quality Map and Community Action Presentation
Teams present a shared water quality map, a brief methods explanation, and a community action plan for protecting local water. Their presentation must include each member’s evidence, visualized results, and a discussion of unexpected findings and limitations.
