Learning Goals & Products

Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to formulate a quantitative survey question that can be answered with numerical data and supports meaningful statistical analysis.

2

Students will be able to collect and organize their collected data using a clear sampling plan and accurate recording procedures.

3

Students will be able to represent a data set with dot plots, histograms, stem plots, and box plots.

4

Students will be able to calculate and interpret mean, median, mode, range, interquartile range, and standard deviation for a data set.

5

Students will be able to analyze the shape, center, spread, and outliers of a distribution to determine which display is most appropriate for communicating the data clearly.

6

Students will be able to evaluate data displays and reports for clarity, accuracy, and misleading features using evidence from scale, labeling, and visual choices.

7

Students will be able to justify conclusions about the student-body data with evidence from multiple representations and peer feedback.

Products

individual

Individual Statistical Investigation Notebook

A research notebook that documents the student’s survey question, sampling plan, raw data record, graph drafts, summary-statistic calculations, and personal analysis. It shows how the student used evidence to decide which display best represents the data and what limitations remain.

team

School Data Display Gallery Walk Presentation and Investigation Report

A team presentation and report synthesizing shared data, multiple statistical displays, and a justified conclusion about the most effective representation. It must include methodology rationale, comparison of center/spread, anomalies or conflicting evidence, and responses to audience questions.
