Learning Goals

1

Students will be able to analyze local air quality data from Mott Haven using tables, graphs, ratios, and rates to identify patterns and support a data claim about neighborhood conditions.

2

Students will be able to represent air quality relationships with simple algebraic expressions and equations to model how pollution indicators change across locations or times.

3

Students will be able to create and test an algorithm for organizing neighborhood observation counts and comparing possible solutions to reduce air pollution near the school.

4

Students will be able to collect and document neighborhood observation data on traffic, idling, truck routes, and possible pollution sources during the South Bronx Unite air walk using consistent measurement conventions.

5

Students will be able to compare proposed air-quality solutions using digital tools and mathematical arguments to determine which option is most feasible and effective.

6

Students will be able to justify conclusions about air quality in Mott Haven with evidence from data displays, calculations, and peer feedback while acknowledging limitations in the evidence.

Mott Haven Air Quality Investigation Notebook

Students maintain an investigation notebook that documents their question, observation notes, data tables, graphs, calculations, and personal analysis across the project. It serves as individual evidence of how they used math to investigate air quality patterns and evaluate one possible solution.

South Bronx Air Quality Data Presentation and Solution Proposal

Teams produce a formal presentation with visuals that synthesizes each member’s evidence into one claim about Mott Haven air quality, an algebraic model or algorithm, and a realistic improvement proposal. The presentation must explain methods, show patterns, address limitations or conflicting findings, and invite community feedback at South Bronx Solutions Night.
