Purpose

This project fosters an understanding of personal and familial histories as components of larger historical narratives, enhancing students' social awareness and reflective thinking. By engaging in storytelling, research, and creative expression, students develop academic skills in historical analysis while forming meaningful connections with their own identities and communities. Through hands-on exploration and collaboration, the project nurtures responsible decision-making and emotional well-being, preparing students for college, careers, civic engagement, and life.

Learning goals

The learning goals focus on developing students' ability to explore personal and familial histories through engaging interviews and research, fostering self-reflection on identity and its historical influences. Students will cultivate social awareness by maintaining supportive relationships during storytelling activities, demonstrating responsible decision-making in their collaborative work. They will gain academic preparation by analyzing historical events that relate to New York State learning standards, while contributing to the creation of a mural that visually synthesizes their insights and cultural knowledge. Through regular reflection and peer interactions, students will set meaningful goals for growing their understanding of how interconnected narratives shape individual and communal identities.

Competencies
  • Reflective and Future Focused - Engages in self-reflection to identify strengths and areas for growth, sets meaningful goals, uses social awareness to maintain supportive relationships, and demonstrates responsible decision-making that prioritizes social, emotional, and mental well-being.
  • Academically Prepared - Demonstrates a strong foundation in the New York State learning standards and is equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve success in college, careers, civic engagement, service, and life.

Products

Throughout the project, students will work collaboratively to design and create a mural that incorporates timelines, family stories, and historical events. Each student will contribute artwork and captions that connect personal histories with broader historical narratives. This mural will be displayed prominently in the school hall, offering a visual celebration of individual and collective identities shaped through family heritage and shared historical experiences.

Launch

Start the project with an engaging 'Family Storytelling Circle,' where students share personal family anecdotes or memories that connect to broader historical themes. Encourage students to find a historical event linked to these stories, fostering curiosity and setting a foundation for deeper exploration. Follow this with an 'Ancestral Artifacts Event,' where students present family heirlooms or significant items, sharing their historical or sentimental value, stimulating discussion on personal and collective histories.

Exhibition

Students will collaboratively create an interactive exhibit entitled "Timelines and Tales Showcase" in the school hall. This will feature a large timeline filled with personal histories, family narratives, and relevant historical events. Students will present their contributions to family and community members, inviting engagement and stories from attendees. This exhibition will unite personal stories with broader historical contexts, encouraging community participation and reflection.
