Purpose

In this project, students will actively explore the enduring impact of ancient Greek government and culture on contemporary American society. Through engaging research, creative role-play, and digital media creation, students uncover the historical connections and present-day relevance of Greek principles. By collaborating with community partners and sharing their findings in a public exhibition, students deepen their understanding of civic engagement and democratic foundations, enhancing their critical thinking and communication skills.

Learning goals

Learning goals for this project include the ability to analyze and draw connections between the governance and cultural elements of ancient Greece and the modern United States. Students will practice critical thinking by evaluating the enduring influence of Greek democracy on American governmental structures. They will develop skills in effective communication through creating engaging video presentations and participating in peer review and community exhibition. Additionally, students will gain a deeper understanding of civic responsibilities by engaging in role-play and collaborative activities that mirror ancient Greek practices, fostering an appreciation for historical impact on contemporary society.

  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will develop a variety of products that showcase their understanding and creativity. They will collaboratively create Instagram-style videos highlighting the influence of Greek government and culture, ensuring each video is historically accurate and engaging. Additionally, students will design architectural sketches that incorporate Greek elements, culminating in a community blueprint project. During the 'Time Capsule Project', they will compile artifacts symbolizing Greece's impact on modern society, which will be shared during a community exhibition event. These products will serve as a comprehensive demonstration of their learning and insights into the lasting legacy of ancient Greece.

Launch

To launch the learning experience, organize a 'Time Capsule Workshop' where students, alongside community partners, brainstorm and select contemporary objects or artifacts that embody the influence of ancient Greek culture and government. Kick off the session with a dynamic presentation showcasing iconic Greek elements still present in today's society, such as democracy, architecture, and civic ideals, to spark curiosity and excitement. Encourage students to engage creatively by predicting how these influences will continue to evolve and impact future societies.

Exhibition

Students will host a community event where they present their Instagram-style videos, sharing their findings on Greek influences with city planners, local historians, and community members. This exhibition acts as a platform for students to engage with a wider audience, fostering dialogue and reflection on the ongoing impacts of ancient Greek culture and governance. To enrich the experience, students will also display their architectural sketches and plans alongside their videos, inviting feedback and discussions on the relevance of Greek architectural features in current urban planning.
