Purpose

Students will use personal and class IXL data to define mathematical success and examine how foundational skills, challenges, and learning strategies have shaped their Algebra 1 growth and mindset. They will interpret sample graphs, calculate averages, create and accurately label at least two graphs, and explain increases, decreases, and plateaus in their data. Through weekly checklists, peer and teacher feedback, and revision, students will develop a Data Poster that combines visual evidence, analysis, reflection, and future learning goals. The project concludes with a classroom Math Growth Gallery Walk where students share their progress since August, communicate with classmates and teachers, and identify effective approaches to mathematical mastery.

Learning goals

Students will accurately create and label at least two graphs from their IXL data, calculate personal and class averages, and interpret increases, decreases, and plateaus. Students will use evidence to explain how foundational skills, learning strategies, and past challenges have influenced their Algebra 1 growth. Students will use reflection, peer and teacher feedback, and a project checklist to revise their analysis, identify effective strategies, and set future learning goals. Students will communicate their changing definition of success through a clear Data Poster, written reflection, and empathetic discussion during a classroom Math Growth Gallery Walk.

Competencies
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create graph-interpretation notes, IXL data tables, and average calculations using personal and class data. They will produce at least two accurately labeled graphs showing increases, decreases, plateaus, and connections between foundational skills and Algebra 1 performance. Weekly drafts will include trend analyses, checklist-based revisions, peer feedback, and reflections on challenges, strategies, mindset shifts, and future learning goals. The final Data Poster will combine the revised graphs, calculations, analysis, reflection, and an evidence-based response to an essential question for a Math Growth Gallery Walk with classmates and teachers.

Launch

Students will practice interpreting different graphs in preparation to analyze their own data. Being able to read the graph and relate the independent and dependent variables to each other builds an understanding of what the graph is displaying.

Exhibition

Host a Math Growth Gallery Walk where each student displays a colorful data poster featuring at least two labeled IXL graphs, calculated averages, trend analysis, and a reflection on growth and mindset since August. Classmates and teachers rotate through the gallery, leave specific feedback, and ask questions about increases, decreases, plateaus, challenges, and successful learning strategies. Each student gives a brief explanation of what success now means to them and identifies a future Algebra 1 learning goal based on the evidence. End with a classroom discussion comparing collective trends while protecting individual student data.
