Purpose

Students work in teams to imagine and design a dream school that helps children learn, play, and solve problems in new ways. Through the read-aloud, real feedback from school leaders and a district architect or facility planner, and repeated design sprints, they use the engineering design process to sketch, build, test, revise, and explain their ideas. The work blends literacy, science, math, art, and technology as teams create blueprints, 3D models, and a prototype of one special feature using clear criteria for safety, space, materials, and function. Throughout the project, students strengthen collaboration, communication, reflection, and problem solving as they prepare to share their designs in a public showcase.

Learning goals

Students will define a school design problem, identify criteria and constraints, and create sketches, blueprints, prototypes, and 3D models that show how shape, space, materials, and movable features support learning, play, and problem solving. They will apply reading, speaking, geometry, measurement, and basic materials testing to explain ideas from If I Built a School, compare multiple design solutions, and revise their work using evidence from tests and feedback. Students will collaborate in teams to make shared decisions, take on roles, listen and respond during talking circles and partner talks, and present their designs clearly to classmates, school leaders, and a district architect or facility planner. They will reflect after each design sprint on what worked, what was challenging, how their ideas changed, and how they grew as learners and teammates.

Products

Teams will create a large blueprint poster that includes labeled spaces, shapes, measurements, and material choices, along with a labeled 3D dream school model with movable parts for learning, play, and problem-solving. During the project, students will also build and test a simple prototype of one special feature, such as a reading nook, science lab, or playground, and document changes with photos, sketches, and reflection notes on a class presentation board. By the end, the class will assemble a collaborative showcase display featuring final models, blueprint posters, sticky-note reflections, and partner talk prompts for visitors at the Future School Celebration Fair and Dream School Showcase. These products should show how teams used feedback from school leaders and the facility planner to revise their ideas for safety, space, and learning.

Launch

Begin with an interactive read-aloud of If I Built a School, pausing for students to act out favorite ideas and notice how the illustrations show spaces for learning, play, and problem solving. Next, host a School Design Kickoff where school leaders share real redesign options and a district architect or facility planner introduces a few kid-friendly design ideas about safety, space, and materials. Then give teams a quick build challenge using simple materials to create one special school feature, followed by a talking circle where they share what worked, what was hard, and one dream-school idea they want to design together.

Exhibition

Host a Dream School Showcase during the Fall Festival as a Future School Celebration Fair where teams display their large blueprint posters, labeled 3D models, special feature prototypes, and a class presentation board with photos, sketches, and revision notes. Invite school leaders and the district architect or facility planner to tour the displays, listen to short partner talks, and ask students how their designs support learning, play, safety, and problem solving. Add a gallery walk with sticky-note feedback, reflection wall sketches and feeling words, and simple partner talk prompts so families, classmates, and community guests can interact with each team’s work. End with a final critique-and-celebration round where students share one change they made after feedback and one design choice they are most proud of.
