The Challenge

Challenge Question

How might we address limited access to clear, trustworthy bilingual savings and investment guidance so that Latino and Hispanic teens and families in Houston can make informed short-, medium-, and long-term financial decisions?

Standards

  • [Texas] PFLE.8F - develop a short-term saving strategy to achieve a goal such as establishing and maintaining an emergency fund
  • [Texas] PFLE.8G - develop an intermediate-term saving and investing strategy to achieve a goal such as accumulating a down payment on a home or vehicle
  • [Texas] PFLE.8C - evaluate the costs and benefits of various savings options such as bank savings accounts, certificates of deposit, and money market mutual funds
  • [Texas] PFLE.8A - determine the exponential growth benefits of starting early to invest with continuous contributions
  • [Texas] PFLE.10C - explain why earning income, spending, credit, debt, saving and investing, and protecting and insuring are important parts of a comprehensive financial plan and develop a plan that incorporates these components.

Learning Partners and Clients

Phase Overview

Phase Key Experiences
Discover
I can investigate how teens in Houston’s Latino community make saving and investing choices by analyzing a realistic family scenario and identifying the root causes of common challenges such as limited emergency funds, confusion about FDIC-insured accounts, and short-, medium-, and long-term financial goals.
Examine
I can compare savings options such as savings accounts, high-yield accounts, certificates of deposit, and money market funds to evaluate their costs, benefits, access, and safety. I can use graphs, sample account data, and the Rule of 72 to explain how early investing and regular contributions grow money over time. I can analyze case studies of Houston Latino families and small businesses to connect short-, medium-, and long-term goals with the most appropriate saving or investing strategy. I can research how emergency funds, down payments, retirement accounts, and pre-tax or after-tax contributions fit into a complete financial plan.
Engineer
I can develop a bilingual financial decision guide and scenario-based simulation that match short-, medium-, and long-term goals for Houston Latino families with practical strategies such as FDIC-insured savings, emergency funds, and beginning investment options.
Do
I can use feedback and real-world response data from classmates, families, and community partners to see how well my bilingual guide helps people choose savings and investment strategies that fit their goals, timeline, and risk level.
Share
I can share my bilingual financial planning solution through an interactive presentation with families, peers, school staff, and representatives connected to the Houston Hispanic Chamber, while explaining what I learned about saving, investing, decision-making, and my own ability to solve real community problems.
