Launch
Launch
Students will launch the egg-drop engineering challenge by experiencing a fast first design-test cycle, connecting the problem to crash safety physics, and setting clear expectations for evidence-based design work in later phases.
Days 1 - 2
Research & Plan
Research & Plan
Students will define measurable criteria and constraints for the egg-drop challenge, investigate how Newtonβs Laws, impulse-momentum, and energy conservation inform safer designs, study car safety and packaging examples, draft multiple container concepts, and produce a team design brief with a data-collection plan for later sensor-based testing.
Days 3 - 8
Decide & Build
Decide & Build
Students will compare multiple egg-container concepts, justify a team design with a weighted decision matrix, learn just-in-time construction moves that increase stopping time, and build a first prototype ready for sensor-based drop testing.
Days 9 - 13
Test & Showcase
Test & Showcase
Students will collect comparable drop-test data, analyze failure points with physics reasoning, revise their egg-protection designs based on evidence, and assemble the slides, graphs, video clips, and engineering story needed for the Crash Lab Showcase.
Days 14 - 18
Showcase
Showcase
Students will present and defend their final egg-protection designs to an authentic audience, using slides, videos, prototype evidence, and physics reasoning to explain how testing and revision improved performance. They will complete the project by demonstrating design outcomes, answering audience questions with quantitative evidence, and documenting their final engineering thinking in the portfolio.
